Microsoft plugs zero-day IE hole
Attention, IE users: it’s over. You can ditch your alternative browsers and return to Microsoft’s sweet, sweet embrace.
At 10:00 AM, Pacific Time this morning, Microsoft released a patch for the zero-day Internet Explorer security hole that made headlines earlier this week. The patch applies to “all affected version of the browser”—that is, versions 6 through 11—and it’s available via Windows Update.
Happily, there’s also a version of the update for Windows XP—even though that operating system exited its Extended Support phase last month. Microsoft doesn’t explain its reasoning, but I’m sure the company didn’t want to see the still-large number of Windows XP machines out there become malware-infested zombies. Either way, the company stresses in its announcement, “Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, and we continue to encourage customers to migrate to a modern operating system, such as Windows 7 or 8.1.”
Microsoft also encourages users to install the latest version of IE. I think I speak for all web designers and web developers in echoing that recommendation.
